As a business owner who knew nothing about business coming into this industry, I realize I have come along way. But, I also know I have a long way to go.

Reflecting on the 2018 season, I look at my part in the successes and failures of the year. Often asking myself questions like:

  1. What can I do to make this employee better?
  2. Can I create new levels within the company for them to get to?
  3. Do I pay them what they are really worth?
  4. How do I create an environment they want to work in?

Just a few questions that have raced through my mind during the season. And I would like to think that I have addressed these with an open mind.

What I Did This Year

The 2018 season presented the beginning of the inevitable, staying out of the field. Removing myself from the field had its moments, but I knew it was something I had to do. This decision was not made because I can no longer do the work or I am lazy, far from the case.

Not being able to handle owner tasks such as; communicating to my clients, setting up structure and a culture I envision due to being in the field, has become reality. The 2017 season showed me that I needed to get back some of the time it takes to do these tasks.

Consistently feeling like I had accomplished nothing showed when my tasks were not completed and it turned into a workload simply due to them not being handled promptly.

Now if I sit here and tell you everything went perfect, you know that would not be true. I feel like the season was a success, but also showed there is more we can work on.

Sales were up, employees embraced the challenge of it is up to them, but it still feels like more can be done.

Plenty of things were getting done. Scheduling, invoicing, and introduction of new software to employees. Many truck repairs due to the 2017 snow season, key equipment purchases for efficiency reasons, delegation of tasks I would normally do. 

I was able to open a line of communication with current clients and focus on building those relationships, damage control, and special requests. Also was able to be the estimator and the face of the company once again.

Stocking the fridge with power drinks, ice cream and water, along with snacks the crews could help themselves to. This was an idea introduced by others in the industry, I do feel like it could have been monitored better by me. 

New opportunities for growth within the company has been created, so any employee that wants to grow with the company has been established.  

Booked a company trip to Louisville, Kentucky for the GIE EXPO. The guys absolutely loved the trip. Rented a mini-van, booked an Air B&B house, and took in the whole experience.

The foundation has been laid to strive towards perfecting what has been introduced. This year will show what we are made of, and can my business run itself with me out of the field.

Every business owner will have their moments of “Why does this guy push me?” or “How can I do more?” That is a good thing that will keep you sharp and ready for the next task.
